On a wooded estate just forty-five minutes from Paris at Varennes-Jarcy, the Les Demeures de Varennes, BW Signature Collection, Varennes Jarcy, France, is a lovely haven of peace in the typical stone architecture of country homes, a bucolic escape from the city in the calm of an old village, with rooms spread across several buildings for a sense of intimacy. The rooms are decorated on an Impressionist theme in soft, restful colours, all looking onto the grounds, garden, or courtyard, some with a private terrace, and a bistro-style restaurant serves seasonal food overlooking the green, with a heated pool, reception rooms opening to the garden, and free parking. Pets are welcome. The estate sits in the gentle Yerres valley where the painter Gustave Caillebotte lived and worked, country he captured again and again in his canvases, with his former riverside home open to visitors, the great châteaux of Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte, and the woodlands of the Brie close by. Along the Yerres, the willows and the slow water still hold the light the Impressionists loved.
